Telephone Credit Card Scam

The telephone credit card scam generally targets college students and people who may be a credit risk.

Here's How it Works

An operator pretending to represent a credit card company calls the consumer's residential telephone number and tells the consumer that he/she has been approved for a credit card.

In order to get the credit card, they need to provide some personal information.  The operator tells the consumer that the deal is only good today, and they must give the information now or lose out on the deal.

Here's How to Avoid The Telephone Credit Card Scam

Never give your personal information to anyone who calls you that you don't know.  Even if the caller seems legitimate, you should check into it first by getting the caller's name, company name, and call back number.

If you are the victim of the telephone credit card scam, be sure to report the incident to:
  1. Your local law enforcement agency
  2. Your phone company - they may credit your charges
  3. The FCC complaint site.
