2007 Common Phone Scams

Here are some tips to protect you and your business from phone scams:
  • NEVER give any personal information over the telephone.  If someone calls stating they are from your bank, a federal agency or anywhere else, get the agent's name and call back number.  Call the agency and find out if they were trying to contact you, prior to revealing any personal information.  Your bank would never call you to verify your account number, because they already know what it is.
  • If it sounds too good to be true...IT IS!!  Don't fall for calls from people telling you that you've won a prize or some cash.  If it sounds like a contest you may have entered, ask them for a business name and callback number.
  • Never use your # button plus a number for someone to "test" your line
  • Make sure your family and/or employees understand 2007 common phone scams.  Advise them never to give out personal or banking information over the phone from someone they don't know.  If the call seems legitimate, they should be advised to get a name and callback number.
  • Don't be pressured by URGENT tactics.  Some of these scam artists use high-pressure tactics, telling consumers they won't get the deal unless they act now.  Legitimate businesses would give you time to consider an offer.
  • The elderly are prime targets - scam artists target the elderly because they're vulnerable, often trusting, and many are on fixed-incomes.  The promise of lots of money for a small investment provides some hope.  Make sure any elderly relatives or friends are aware of telephone scams and know how to protect themselves from fraud.
